The one sheet is the most common movie poster size. Up until 1984 or so, one sheets were 27x41, while after that they 27x40.
Thomas Edison’s Motion Picture Patents Company introduced and standardized the one sheet in 1909.
Being the most popular size of movie poster, one sheets are usually available in more than one style (i.e. with different artwork) for major movie releases.
In the 1970s, cheaper paper was used less and movie posters had a clay finish which gives them their shiny, glossy appearance.
